Open Jams @ The Big Easy - Mon and Thur

Postby SmittyG on Sun May 24, 2009 3:30 am

Red shot me a message to let me know that The Big Easy has open jams on Thursdays and Sundays. No designated host band; no cover charge. Just open musical fun. The Thursday one tends towards all styles of music while the Sunday one seems to focus on old style R&B and traditional blues. Could be worth checking out to see what is going on.

Edit 8/18/09: Saw a notice that the jams are now on Mondays and Thursdays.

What I wouldn't give for one of those old Tuesday night jams at The Big Easy.

Know what I haven't seen in a long time? Some sort of open mic or jam, that entire bands can sit in on to do a couple of tunes. Not really a battle of the bands, ha. But certainly not the usual battle of the guitar players that open mic's and jams tend to turn out like either. One's sort of structured and the other can be but only sometimes, depending on who's there. That was always so entertaining to me, because people who weren't necessarily a band, or even in the same band they usually were, got together, practiced up a couple of songs together, then did them for an audience just for the hell of it.

It was really fun to see this one and that one playing together who didn't usually play in the same genre or places, or people you never knew did this or that. Darned drummers! always play more instruments, ha. You'd see a drummer playing guitar, or a bassist playing something else. Maybe even a stand up vocalist playing an instrument and the keyboardist doing stand up vocals. From a sheer audience perception, I find that just fascenating.

Well, it seems, if I'm reading Red correctly, that is totally possible here. The main thing he wanted to stress to me was that it wasn't structured in some specific way like I ran blues jams.

Well, Red didn't specifically state in his message to me but, after searching his myspace page, I'm going to guess 8pm--that seems to be his start time generally.

I bet that would be a refreshing addition to the customary things we already enjoy around here. Can't wait to hear it!

I don't know of anyone actually going to them. I don't know if anyone ever did. Red shot me a message asking me to help get the word out and I posted what he told me. I have no clue if he is still trying to make this happen or not. I guess I'm just a fountain of nothing this morning; sorry.

Looked up their only web site at myspace. They posted the announcement on March 16th. Nothing since.

Again, it's cool...I was just full of questions, not much action anyway, since I just laid in bed most of the day, got up a couple of times to get online and crawled back in bed.

These are still going on. I've heard from several folks saying that the Sunday one is still pretty weak as far as turnout goes, but that the Thursday one has turned into a pretty hot little jam. Several notable players regularly attend and participate. I'll have to try and remember to swing by next week and check it out.

They open the doors about 6pm. Wallace Walker is playing blues cds from 6pm to 10pm on Sunday.
They are hoping to build the Sunday night crowd and maybe even have bands on Sunday.
