SmittyG on Bass @ Quincey's -- (Tue) 9/1

Postby SmittyG on Wed Jul 22, 2009 6:33 am

I know this is a ways out, but I figure it is going to take a lot of bumping and promoting to make this work so I'm getting started now. Quincey's Pub has agreed to let me have the stage (or the far corner of the room) from 5-7pm on Tuesday, September 1st. They have a pretty cool trocks happy hour thing that goes on and I overheard Scott bitching about the music selection playing in the background and figured I would come to his rescue. Of course, once he heard my plan, he mumbled something about, "Uh . . . I think I'm OK with what they have playing after all." Well, too late, hoss.

This is going to be my debut doing a solo bass gig. I'll be playing my weird mix of ambient/jazz originals with maybe a jazz standard or two tossed in just so I can keep my cover band credentials up to date. And, for added amusement, I will have a tip jar strategically placed. Now, for those of you newer to trocks, you might find it a bit gauche that I blatantly troll for tips in this manner, but you are not quite on the right page with this. You see, trocks members have a tradition of using a tip jar to submit tips, thoughts, suggestions, ideas and so forth. I have told the Quincey's crew to have plenty of pens and scraps of paper handy for just this purpose. I will take the best of those tips and post them on trocks the next day so I need folks to be really creative with these (I mean, "don't run with scissors" is a classic but, come on, you guys are more clever than that).

I'm looking forward to the show and hope to see you folks there.

Thanks. I loved the support I got from Lent last night when Nan was telling him what I was going to be doing--his only reply was to roll his eyes and go, "That ain't jazz!" I've not even played the first note of the show and have already received my first review.

I'm currently working on an arrangement of this to use for the show:

Good song! Can't wait to hear your version. I thought this was "The Irish Rovers" but they're all just kids, ha. It's "The Irish Rovers Celtic Orchestra" ha. Not the old Irish Rovers that did the "Unicorn song" and "Grandma got run over by a raindeer". Besides, the old ones were Canadians anyway, ha.

Finally worked out my arrangement for this tune last night. I am amazed at all the different takes on it. The basic A-section and B-section melodies remain the same, but there is a lot of variation possible with these simple fiddle tunes. I didn't have any Irish percussion loops so I took a little bit from several different ethnic sets I had to give me an approximation. I'm going to have fun performing this one.

I've been putting the rest of the percussion loops together for this and starting to map out the whole show. Now, with less then 10 days to go, I'm starting to really feel the weight of this one. I'm going to be alone, playing only instrumental music, performing songs most of the audience have never heard in their lives. What the hell was I thinkin'?

Not to worry. Everybody will be looking at the backup dancers, anyway. Remember the two little magic words in show biz: Hooker Dresses.

Well, with my current budget, I would have to hit the rough part of town and get me a couple of crack ho's to be my dancers. Not sure how well that would go over but I think you would be totally correct about one thing--no one would be looking at me. :)

They're a little worse for wear, but, gosh darn it, they try harder!

That's always been my fundamental principal..... stay as invisible as you can. If they like you, they'll come looking for you. If it doesn't go so well, they won't be sure who to blame.

Good luck with your gig... it sounds pretty interesting.
